Trooper!

Last Tuesday, Jacob was pretty fussy and just wanted to be sitting up. He wasn't sleepping much either.

Wednesday he started vomitting after each feeding, so we called Info Sante.

A few minutes later we were on our way to the hospital where he was born. We arrived at Emergency and were later admitted. Jacob was hooked up to an iv to stay hydrated. He had two Ultrasounds and finally they were able to eliminate that he might have gastro and GERD. They were now certain that with the last Ultrasound he had Pyloric Stenosis. Apparently it is common in first born boys his age.

"Pyloric stenosis is a narrowing of the pylorus, the lower part of the stomach through which
food and other stomach contents pass to enter the small intestine. When an infant has
pyloric stenosis, the muscles in the pylorus have become enlarged to the point where food is
prevented from emptying out of the stomach".

After two nights at that hospital, and Jacob throwing up after almost every feeding, we were on our way to The Children's.

We didn't stay long in Emergency and were admitted. We now shared a room with four other people. We were expecting the worse, we had the privacy and space to feel comfortable before but we felt in better hands at the Children's so we got over it pretty quick. There were so many sick kids, it was packed with mostly babies. Rich and I were disappointed to find out that only one of us was allowed to stay in the room overnight. So we both took turns sleeping in the car the second night. We might have been able to sleep on the couch in the parents room but we were way too spooked. We teased each other about the 10th floor (which was the OR floor that was empty at night and very creepy). Needless to say, we were very tired.

Jacob had surgery the next day at about 10 a.m. The surgeons were great, very down to earth, and went through everything before hand. They were very reasurring. My main concern was that he would not wake up. That was the most terrifying part. It was very hard to see him wheeled away that morning but I knew that he was in good hands and that it was for the best.

He was out of the OR in less than an hour and he was up, eating and back in our room four hours later. After four feedings (that stayed down) we were discharged.

I was still afraid to leave the hospital in case he started to throw up again but so far he's only been sick twice (which is ok). His tummy has to reset. We have to worry if he stops having pee pee diapers or if he's vomiting lots.

So it's certainly been a rough first month. Just when we were getting into a groove this super scary thing happens. Jacob has been a trooper, we're very poud of how great he's been despite this. But please, no more hospitals! At least it was The Children's, a very impressive place I must say.

Update: Jacob's doing great!
